Hydrocarbon components of crude oil
Hydrocarbons contain a lot of energy. Many of the things derived from crude oil like gasoline, diesel fuel, paraffin wax and so on take advantage of this energy. Hydrocarbons can take on many different forms. The smallest hydrocarbon is methane (CH 4), which is a gas that is a lighter than air. Longer chains with 5 or more carbons are liquids. Crude oil is a natural multicomponent mixture. Its major part is composed of hydrocarbons (alkanes, naphthenes, and aromatics). Their content in oils ranges between 30% and 100%. Most important among the non-hydrocarbon components are resins and asphaltenes. It is the result of an intensive multidisciplinary effort to assess the problems relating to petroleum-derived hydrocarbons in the marine environment. Specifically, it examines the inputs, analytical methods, fates, and effects of petroleum in the marine environment. They make up a second primary constituent of crude oil. Aromatic hydrocarbons are also cyclic but are derivatives of benzene. The rings are characterized by alternating double bonds and, in contrast to olefins, are quite stable, though not as stable as paraffins. Crude oils are complex mixtures of these hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are mined from oil sands and oil shale, and potentially extracted from sedimentary methane hydrates. These reserves require distillation and upgrading to produce synthetic crude and petroleum.
While all crude oils are essentially hydrocarbons, the differences in properties, especially the variations in molecular structure, mean that a crude is more or less
